Atlantic Coast Tour
April 13th - Peter's Point to Jeckyll Island Campground

Return to Tour Index Page | Today's Video

Camping at Peter's Point is less than ideal. Kids cruise the parking lot all night so we are shorted on our much needed rest. We break camp at the crack of dawn so we can go down to the beach and watch the sun rise over the Atlantic. The sky is quite overcast. We see a glimmer of light form behind the clouds just before it starts to rain. So much for the dramatic sunrise of our dreams.

Sunrise on the Atlantic

We cycle through light showers for about 10 miles. We are treated to views of the ocean, and quiet roads this Sunday morning. We see homes made up to look like lighthouses. Stopping in at a McDonalds in Fernandia Beach for a human essantial turns out to be a real treat. Bec starts talking about our trip with the manager and the next thing you know we are gifted with free cini-melts and coffee, a ten dollar value! An old man who overhears Bec talking about tandeming comments, "I don't know why you have to dress like you're from outer space to ride a bike, if I were going to Maine I'd take an airplane". We just ignore him and resent the comment about dressing like space people. Another local couple stops and talks to us. They wish they had met us the night before so we didn't have to sleep in the park. The rain is still coming down and they are worried the tennis tournement they have tickets for will be cancelled. We are worried too.

People from outer space

The rain continues to fall. This was not in the weather forcast at all. We stop at yet another McDonalds and decide to kill some time there doing computer work. This turns out to be a good thing because the rain finally stops and we can now go about our merry way cycling to Jeckyll Island.

Crossing the state line from Florida to Georgia came and went with no fanfare. Georgia didn't even have a welcome sign to greet us. We did see a bike route sign that was shot up with bird shot. That's good enough for us. At this point in the journey signs along the road are more entertaining than the scenery. One of the signs says "Dead Peoples Things For Sale" and another says "El Cheapo Gas".

As we turn on to State Bicycle Route 10 an actual bike route to Jeckyll Island we are flabbergasted that the shoulder has rumble strips all the way across it. This goes on for several miles until we turn into the park. Once inside the park we are rewarded with the sweet smell of wildflowers in bloom. The flowers line the road like a scene from The Wizard Of OZ. Nearly 80 miles of cycling today brings us to our resting place for the night. Our campground is filled with towering oaks and the sound of birds. A neighboring camper sees us ride in. He is also a tandemist and is anxious to talk with us. He invites us to his campsite after we get settled for frozen yogurt. Life is truly good!
