Atlantic Coast Tour
April 15th, Harmony Lake RV Park to South Savannah KOA

The stay at Harmony Lake was worth braving the crisp air of the Georgia night. Convection fog rolls off the lake as we eat breakfast and ready ourselves for the days ride. Bec wants to get into camp early so she can find us a place to stay tomorrow. When we depart all is quiet, all of our neighbors are still sleeping.

Lake Harmony still sleeping

The temperature is unseasonably cold for this time of year we are told. Bec is happy to remind me that it was she who insisted that we bring our winter cycling gear. Louie is greatful that she did because the cold air is biting as we turn the tandem into the headwind that would last throughout the day.

Once again the State Bike Route 95 is covered with rumble strips. They seem to appear at the places we need a shoulder the most. We continue to ride unabated inside the lane of highway traffic. Trucks and autoist give us plenty of room and an occasional friendly honk. We stop at the smallest church in America and take short break. Louie snaps a litte picture before we return to riding.

Smallest church in America

Having only three days of cycling in Georgia and this being day two, Louie is getting desperate to find his souvenir license plate for his collection. We roll into what appears to be auto shop of some sort having junk cars lying about the property. Louie pokes around until he finds a man working there and asks him if he can buy a Georgia plate from him. It take the man some time but he finds a nice one for us and graciously takes a few bucks for it.

Arriving at our camp in less than 40 miles may not sound like much us but we are whipped none the less. That darn headwind made the days ride feel more like 60 miles. We still had to find a market in town. We ask a local kid we meet where the grocery store is and he gives us good directions and some cycling tips. He tells us "You all should ride facing traffic 'cause it's real hard to ride down that way". Well, we know better and decide to take our chances. Turns out that kid was probably right. We had just about every deadly obstacle a cyclist could face trying to get to that store. Rumble strips, freeway ramps, left turn signals in five lane traffic. Had we been less than hardend city riders we'de probably be dead. While Louie is inside shopping Bec talks with a lady who whishes she could ride to work but the roads are just too awful. Did I mention this is all on Georgia State Bike Route 95?
