How The Blueberry Got It's Name

I wanted a Tandem forever, but did not know anything about them except that they looked "cool". I did not even have a partner to ride with me. I tried to climb on the front of a few but I have very short legs and could not find one that I could comfortably straddle except for a low end green mountain tandem. I purchased it and took my grandbabies out and anyone else I could convince to climb on. However, I just was not happy with the bike. It was sluggish and difficult to maneuver.

I took a spinning class above Gateway Bikes in Portland Oregon. One day I wandered in before class and there was a small blue colored Cannondale tandem complete with fat aluminum tubes and everything. The first thought through my mind was "Wow A blueberry tandem!" It was love at first sight. The name fit for more reasons the color. Tandeming presents many of the same healthful benefits of eating blueberries. The tubes are plump and round just like blueberries. It was just my size. I had to have it.

I captained The Blueberry for a year but wanted to stoke as well. I couldn't find anyone small enough to fit on the front. Howver, my captain was right in front of my nose, in Gateway Bikes, building tandems. I realized that Louie was perfect for the job and asked if he would captain The Blueberry some time. The Blueberry Tandem Team was born. We have been riding The Blueberry together ever since - all over Idaho, Oregon, Washington, New Mexico, Colorado, Virginia, North Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Mississippi. We have even mountain biked on The Blueberry in Yellowstone National Park.

Becky celebrates reaching the summit of LaVeta Pass in New MexicoThe tandem experience is unlike any other biking experience. You are totally in sync with the other person on the tandem. Together you make the ride happen. You support the other person when they are down and they in turn support you. I love how fast they go downhill and on the flats, how they cut through a headwind, how different they look, how technical the climbs are, and how darn much fun they can be. We hope you enjoy our ride stories and when you are done, try a tandem and be prepared for the ride of a lifetime!
