Take A Kid For A Ride Ride Report 7/16/00
The weather was gorgeous the day we met with fellow TNT Tandem Club members Bill and Anne McElhoes and Dan Morgan
at Oral Hull , a vacation resort
for the blind. Oral Hull is nestled down in a valley next to the Sandy River. The road on the campus made a figure 8 course ,
like a race track . We were able to get some good speed on a downhill and lean tandems a bit in the turns
to give the kids a thrill!
We had four tandems, two small ones we brought, Bill's medium size one and Dan's large silver bullet. Dan brought a bunch of
helmets loaned from friends and neighbors. Anne started fitting the kids with the helmets and spotted them as they mounted the
tandems. Bells ringing and captains whooping, the parade began. Tandems passed each other at high speeds. Kids hung on tightly,
grinning from ear to ear. "Faster!" They would shout.
Anne kept busy getting actions shots with the camera. Bec came coasting in to the start unable to pedal because the connecting
chain had somehow come off. As the pit crew transferred the rider to another tandem, mechanics quickly repaired The Blueberry.
Getting a fresh stoker, back out she went.
Louie was a favorite among the kids since he would take the corners at heart stopping speeds.
They all wanted a ride on the Raspberry. Bill got the Oral Hull all time land speed record for a kid-powered vehicle peaking at 27 MPH.
He kept trying to beat it but was getting worn out. Even with a fresh kid, he was unable to break his incredible speed record.
Louie took him on but was only able to hit 26 MPH, claiming that his kid could not reach the drops.
Bec was not even in the running as her top speed was only 15 MPH. The Raspberry logged 8 miles on the closed course with an
average speed of 14 MPH.
After the ride we all went inside for lemonade and brownies. We asked the kids what they thought.
Mark Brooks, 12 years old, said, "I liked it. It was fun. Thanks for riding with us. I liked how fast we went!"
Alex Prince, 16 years old, commented, "I loved it because of Louie and how good he told me what to do with the pedals and how
he went fast. I liked Dan, too."
April, 22 years old, said, "I liked Bill and his wonderful sense of humor. I taught Bill some Gallic while we rode."
Andrew Nautz, 10 years old, remarked, "I liked Louie because he would talk to me and go so fast like, HHRRrrrrmmmmmmm!'
Shamali Brooks, 17 years old, said, "It was nice for me because I haven't ridden a bike since I got out of school.
I liked the cool air in my hair. I liked feeling like I could ride a bike again. I had the greatest time."
James who is 14, Nick who is 16, Mindi who is 11 and Ricky who is 9 all ran off to play before we could ask them how they
liked the ride. However, as we were leaving they were yelling their thanks to us from inside the dorm room.
Everyone involved had a wonderful time. We look forward to joining our friends at Oral Hull for another ride in the future.
