Ride Around Mt. Adams
Ride Report 9/09/00

As if beautiful people riding expensive bikes in an exotic location were not enough, Anne and Bill corralled family members, Larry and Kevin, to man a sag wagon with a trunk full of food and beverages both hot and cold. Nature provided the forest, complete with waterfalls and great weather.

Tandem Club Members at Mt. Adams Ranger Station After the first 1500-foot climb, we regrouped at a wayside where we could take pictures of Mt Adams behind the cyclists. The temperature began to drop and the wind started to pick up. To warm us up the sag support team made hot chocolate for us. It came complete with mini marshmallows and whipped cream! MMMMM!

We stopped again to take pictures of a waterfall that cascaded down on our right then under the highway and down on our left. We continued up to Big Spring Creek waterfall where we ate our lunch to the sound of falling water. Most of the climbing done, we rode out the rollers, flew down a big long stretch and squealed into Langfield Falls. We hiked through the forest down to the bottom of the falls. After the hike, Louie got the hiccups. Everyone tried all kinds of things to cure him. He finally quit after he started riding again.

There was one small climb and then an eight-mile downhill run back to the Ranger Station in Trout Lake. All of the tandems were cruising at speeds in excess of 45 MPH. Cars parked at a wayside halfway down the hill, looked on in awe of the speeding tandems. Back at the Ranger Station, our group agreed to meet for dinner in Hood River. We all had a great time at dinner talking about the ride and trading stories of the road. We can't wait for Bill and Anne to lead their next ride.
